RAJ PATEL - Stuffed and Starved

While those of us who reside in wealthy nations generally eat whatever we want, people just a continent away suffer from malnutrition—seemingly due to a scarcity of food. At the Canadian launch of his widely anticipated book Stuffed and Starved (HarperCollins Canada), noted activist, academic and author Raj Patel will deliver an incisive multimedia presentation about the politics of the global food chain, followed by a Q&A session with the audience moderated by Wayne Roberts of the Toronto Food Policy Council. — A This Is Not A Reading Series event presented by Pages Books & Magazines, HarperCollins Canada and EYE WEEKLY.

"One of the most dazzling books I have read in a very long time. The product of a brilliant mind, and a gift to a world hungering for justice."
-- Naomi Klein, Author of No Logo and The Shock Doctrine

STUFFED AND STARVED: MARKETS, CHOICES AND THE BATTLE FOR THE WORLD’S FOOD SYSTEM delivers a timely and thought-provoking look at the global food chain. Activist, academic and author Paj Patel asks us to understand how our supermarket shopping makes us complicit in denying freedom to the world’s poorest citizens and to recognize how we ourselves are poisoned by our choices. Stuffed and Starved exposes a mechanism that is unfamiliar to most of us—the world’s food system—and the web made up of corporations, the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, government agencies and corporate lobbyists. From farming collectives in Brazil to kitchens of fast-food restaurants, Patel tracks specific crops of coffee, high-fructose corn syrup and soy as they wind their way through the international food distribution network. Stuffed and Starved offers a compelling look at how “haves” and “have-nots” alike suffer the consequences of a food system cooked to a corporate recipe.

RAJ PATEL was educated at Oxford, the London School of Economics and Cornell University. He is currently a fellow at the Institute for Food and Development Policy in Oakland, California, a visiting researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and a visiting scholar at the Center for African Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. Patel has worked for the World Bank, interned at the WTO, consulted for the UN and been involved in international campaigns against his former employers. Stuffed and Starved is his first book.
