| DANIEL ALLEN COX - SHUCK; IVAN COYOTE - THE SLOW FIX Acclaimed writer Lisa Foad hosts “C is for Cox & Coyote”, an evening with two of Canada's finest queer storytellers, Daniel Allen Cox and Ivan Coyote. Cox will perform "Unzip 101: The Fine Art of Shucking Your Pants" to launch his novel about a street hustler, Shuck. Why did Coyote return to her short story roots in the collection, The Slow Fix? It’s a long story but she will relay it with aplomb during a conversation with Foad. – A This Is Not A Reading Series event presented by Pages Books & Magazines, Arsenal Pulp Press and EYE WEEKLY. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom, 1214 Queen St W, Toronto Wed, Sept 17; 7:30 (doors 7pm) free
SHUCK Daniel Allen Cox presents the tragicomic tale of a young New York hustler named Jaeven Marshall as a series of delightfully candid diary entries. Jaeven is convinced that literary success is within his grasp yet he struggles to find a publisher. Much of his creative energy goes into dumpster diving, tweaking and preserving his fleeting reputation as a porn star. When Jaeven’s love affair with a painter grows sour and his dream of becoming a literary sensation wanes, he seeks solace in hustling. Shuck is a remarkable peep show of a novel about what binds artists and prostitutes, and the collateral damage that happens when they try to recover what they have lost.
THE SLOW FIX Famed storyteller Ivan E. Coyote returns to her short story roots in a disarmingly funny collection that subverts our pre-conceived notions of gender roles. In "By Any Other Name," for instance, Coyote engages in some serious male bonding with her Uncle Rob. And in the title story Coyote does her best to fix what's wrong in the world by telling the homophobe in the barber's seat next to hers to shut up. Coyote excels at isolating the small yet significant truths in our everyday gestures and interactions. By doing so, she helps us to embrace not what makes us women or men, but human beings.
DANIEL ALLEN COX is a celebrated writer and performer. He is also a former Inches cover model, video porn star, and interviewer for the New York Waste. Cox is the author of the novella Tattoo This Madness In (Dusty Owl Press). Shuck (Arsenal Pulp) is his debut novel. Cox lives in Montreal.
IVAN E. COYOTE is one of Canada's most acclaimed storytellers. The Slow Fix (Arsenal Pulp) is her fourth story collection. Her debut novel, Bow Grip (Arsenal Pulp), won the ReLit Award. Coyote is a founding member of the performance collective Taste This, and a long-time columnist for Xtra! Magazine. She currently lives in Ottawa.
